Capitola is a city with a rich history, dating back to before the time of California statehood.  Its annals catalogue great successes, spectacular failures, and a fair amount or interesting folklore.

Its name comes not from a reference to a “capital” or “head” of the Soquel Creek on which it was founded, but was taken from the heroine of a novel popular in the middle 1800′s – “Capitola”.

Although the area had been known for its agriculture, producing grain, potatoes, and cherries, it soon became a favorite spot for vacationers.  It developed as a resort and was christened “Camp Capitola” around the 1870’s. It then became “California’s First Seaside Resort”.

The floriculture industry blossomed (pun intended) here as well, and in the 1950′s Capitola added “Begonia Capital of the World” to its credits.

Another bit of Capitola trivia: It was an event in Capitola that gave nearby resident Alfred Hitchcock his inspiration for the movie “The Birds”.  It seems that, in 1961, local birds feeding on bacteria-laden shellfish became ”intoxicated” and flew into roofs and attacked residents.  It was not until the 1980′s that the cause of the stange avian behavior was determined.

Today, Capitola thrives as a popular destination with tourists, with its quaint and trendy shops, local restaurants, and its well-kept beaches.

Capitola sits between the areas of Aptos and Live Oak along the Monterey Bay coastline and is home to a little over 10,000 residents.
