Capitola Jewel Box – The Jewel Box, one of Capitola’s best known neighborhoods, sits on the bluffs above Cliff Drive and Capitola Beach. It gets its name from the streets themselves – Garnet, Emerald, Opal, etc. – and is a product of the building boom that came after WWII.

Capitola Jewel Box – Gem of the Sea
Although this was not the first housing development in Capitola, it is perhaps the best known.
Well laid out streets perched on the cliffs above Capitola Beach and the Monterey Bay were once the site of modest seaside bungalows built in the post-World War II expansion that took this area from being known as a vacation destination and agricultural area to a city in its own right.
Because of their wonderful location overlooking the Monterey Bay and just a short walk to Capitola Beach, they were a wonderful place for families to live and play and still have an easy commute to the larger employment centers nearby.
Today, this pride-of-place location along the Monterey Bay and close proximity to Capitola Beach has encouraged many folks to remove or remodel the original homes and construct large, modern executive homes.
It is not unusual to find new, modern homes sitting next to a fifty-year-old cottage – or an old cottage being removed to build a new home! This interesting and eclectic collection of architecture makes it one of the most popular neighborhoods in Capitola.
But the eyes of the Jewel Box are not only toward the beach. It is an easy walk to the 41st Avenue Mall – a major shopping center with many large department stores mixed with a variety of specialty shops. It is also an easy walk to Whole Foods, a major health-conscious grocery store.
In fact, it is hard to find a better location that combines leisure activities, Sun and sand, and nightlife with the kind of shopping you would expect to find in cities many times its size.
That is one of the things that makes Jewel Box homes sparkle!
