Lafayette California Marquis de Lafayette statue

The Marquis de Lafayette keeps his vigilant watch over his namesake, Lafayette California and its downtown park

Lafayette, California takes its name from American Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette.  The spelling changed from “LaFayette” to “La Fayette” to “Lafayette” over the years, and it wasn’t until the 1930’s that it officially took its present form.

As with most of the cities in this area, it gained prominence at around the time of California statehood.  Over time, Lafayette – once an agricultural center and mill town –  became an upscale residential suburb of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Area.

Today, Lafayette is known for its nationally ranked schools, gentle rolling hills, and natural attractions such as the Lafayette Reservoir and Briones Regional Park.

Lafayette residents enjoy a rather high median income – well above $100,000 per year for households and approaching $150,000 per year for families.

Postino Restaurant, Lafayette California

Upscale eateries such as Postino help to make the Lafayette California downtown area a delightful place to shop or dine. This is the site of the original Lafayette Post Office, which is how this fine-dining restaurant gets its name

Its proximity to the large employment centers of San Francisco and Oakland, the availability of public transportation such as BART, and its relationship to Bay Area freeways and highways make Lafayette a favorite choice of on-the-go executives and their families.

Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda make up an area of Contra Costa County known as “LaMorinda”.
