The Historic Orinda Theatre in Orinda Village, Orinda California

The historic Orinda Theatre, still in operation, has been a landmark generations on Contra Costa residents or those coming from Oakland and San Francisco to visit

Originally, Orinda was mainly known for ranches and a summer getaway from the colder summers of San Francisco and the cities west of the Berkeley Hills.  Orinda was named after poet Katherine Philips, who was herself nicknamed after a “pastoral setting”.

The area was known as “Orinda” before the turn of the Twentieth Century, but it wasn’t until 1985 that it was finally incorporated.

Orinda became more popular and developed steadily after the 1937 opening of the Caldecott Tunnel.  Orinda enjoys a close proximity to San Francisco and Oakland and is served by the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) through the Orinda BART Station.

Its median income per household is around $187,000 per year.

Orinda California has long been known for its quality public education system.  As with the other LaMorinda Cities, the lower K-8 schools are a part of the Orinda Union School District.  The only high school in Orinda, Miramonte High School, is a part of the Acalanes Union High School District.  Each district is the highest ranked in California according to the state Academic Performance Index (API).

The California Independent Film Festival calls the historic Orinda Theatre its home and, on April 22, 2010 had their first official opening.  The reknowned California Shakespeare Theater  (the ”Cal Shakes”), performs from June to October at the Bruns Memorial Amphitheater (located in the hills north of highway 24 from Orinda Village). The Theater’s conservatory operates throughout the year, featuring programs for children, teenagers, young actors, teachers and adults.
