Pittsburg was once known as “New York of the Pacific”, no doubt due to an early land-owner and ex-New Yorker, Jonathan Stevenson. But it was the discovery of coal at the beginning of the 1900’s that made Pittsburg (named after the Pennsylvania industrial center of a similar name) the industrial center it remains today.
Since then, the city has grown in population and in prominence. Residents find the easy access to California Interstate highways a benefit in commuting to Oakland and San Francisco. Pittsburg has enjoyed continued residential redevelopment growth and has increased its population to over 60,000 people.
It is the industrial home of USS-POSCO Industries (a joint venture between US Steel and POSCO of South Korea), and is the site of a Dow Chemical Company facility and the home of the Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream manufacturing plant.
Bay Point was formerly known as West Pittsburg and is nestled between the cities of Pittsburg and Concord along the Carquinez Straits. In 2000, its population was lightly over 21,ooo.
