In spite of its well-heeled population, however, Danville, CA does its best to maintain a “small town” feel and a rustic, country lifestyle.  By limiting the size of commercial development, Danville has managed to maintain its downtown area with small boutique shops and eateries, and this only adds to its charm.

It also the headquarters of some large companies – many of them in the financial services and consulting industry – taking advantage of its location along the 680 Freeway between Walnut Creek and San Ramon for easy access to the entire Bay Area.

Recreation is also a part of Danville life.  The Iron Horse Trail – a converted rail line that once traveled through the city center – allows joggers, bicyclists, and even leisurely walkers to traverse a path that ultimately stretches from Concord to San Ramon as it winds past the downtown shopping and town center.

Danville has two public high schools – Monte Vista High School and San Ramon Valley High School – and a private college-prep school, Athenian School.  Public education is under the administration of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) .

There is some debate over the origin of the town’s name.  One story is that it is name for an early land owner, Daniel (Dan) Inman, who did not like the sound of the name Inmanville and derived its name from his first name.

Another story is that Daniel named it in honor of his Mother-in-Law’s birthplace – Danville Kentucky.

One thing is certain: Danville, California has come a long way – from its sleepy agricultural beginnings and rail stop days to becoming one of the most prestigious addresses in the Bay Area and the nation.
