Martinez Homes For Sale - History at the Water’s Edge
Martinez California gets its name from an early Mexican land-grant holder, Ygnacio Martinez. It has figured prominently in California lore from pre-statehood, through the Gold Rush of 1849, to the present day.
The historic downtown traces its past from the California Gold Rush in the 1850’s to a ferry port on the Carquinez River to the home of naturalist John Muir. Many of the buildings from these early California days have been preserved and are still in use.
Legend has it that the “martini” takes its name from Martinez and that the drink was first concocted in one if its waterfront bars.
Martinez is also the birthplace of New York Yankee Joe DiMaggio, who grew up fishing off its shores.
But although Martinez is a well-known historical site and important industrial port, it is also a hiker’s and nature-lover’s paradise.
It is home to the Martinez Regional Shoreline, Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline, Briones Regional Park, Waterbird Regional Preserve, and the McNabney Marsh – all wildlife preserves and part of the East Bay Regional Parks system.
Martinez is also located along the Bay Area Ridge Trail which connects to the San Francisco Bay Trail, a planned recreational project that will ultimately link 400 miles of hiking and bicycling trails in the greater Bay Area for equestrians, mountain-bikers, hikers, and outdoor fanciers.
There is a public bus service linking it to several Bay Area Rapid Transit stations in the area. In addition, Martinez is conveniently located near Highway 4, Highway 680, and the Interstate 80 freeways providing easy access to the entire Bay Area.
