Moraga California combines the communities of the Town of Moraga, Rheem, and Rheem Valley and gets its name from Joaquin Moraga, grandson of Jose Moraga, the founder of San Francisco. It is the wealthiest place in the United States with a population above 10,000.
Unlike many of the surrounding towns and cities which trace their origins to around the time of California statehood, Moraga did not become a township until 1974. Since then, however, Moraga has become an upscale part of the Lamorinda area (a name derived from the cities of Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda) and easily holds its own with its equally wealthy cousins.
It is the home of the Moraga Country Club and its 18-hole regulation course, 25 meter swimming pools and 12 lighted tennis courts.
In addition, Moraga has its own school district, the Moraga School District, comprised of:
- Camino Pablo Elementary School, grades K-5
- Los Perales Elementary School, grades K-5
- Donald L. Rheem Elementary School, grades K-5
- Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, grades 6-8
Campolindo High School is a part of the Acalanes Union High School District (AUHSD).
There are also private schools Saklan Valley School (formerly, Moraga Country Day School and Carden School of Moraga), and Orion Academy a secondary school for students with conditions such as Asperger syndrome.
It is also the home of Saint Mary’s College of California, a private university.
Not including St Mary’s College, Moraga has a population of nearly 18,000.
