Oakland Homes For Sale – in the Capital of the East Bay

Oakland grew in importance primarily because of its location on San Francisco Bay, but after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the displaced residents of that city found Oakland a welcoming haven. World War II brought another influx of people from all over the country to work in the manufacturing facilities and shipyards, aiding in the war effort.

Oakland homes for sale and Lake Merritt

Oakland homes for sale range from large urban estates to condos, apartments, and lofts. Here, high-rise buildings rim the edge of pastoral Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland

Today, Oakland is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world.

In spite of its size, Oakland is still a city of neighborhoods. Many of the Oakland homes were built in the 1940’s to 1960’s to accommodate the large increase in population, but it is not unusual to find Victorian styled homes constructed at the turn of the previous century and ultra modern homes with modern features.  In fact, for a city as well-established as Oakland California, there has been a surprising amount of new homes and houses constructed in the past decade!

Some of Oakland’s premier neighborhoods are:

Grizzly Peak and Tunnel Road:  This suburban area is known for its single family homes built from the late 60’s to the mid 1990’s.

You may find some historic homes here along with some small attached homes interspersed with older medium sized homes. The setting is woodsy and has some spectacular views of the Bay and the surrounding East Bay communities.

Broadway Terrace:  Decidedly urban in its feel and surroundings, close to the activity of downtown, but removed from many of its undesirable side effects. Mostly single-family homes of medium size, but don’t be shocked to find the occasional large, mansion style home. Many of these homes have a historical pedigree, but many go back no further than the World War II era. Graceful, established streets and yards.

Trestle Glen:  Another urban setting, but this time with many historical homes and some large 4+ bedroom homes. A few homes built after 1995, but predominantly older, well-established homes on well-tended lots.

College of Saint Albert:  City living with charmingly small single-family homes and attached homes and apartments that have stood the test of time. Some newer homes here, but mostly mid 20th Century vintage.

Canyon:  To the Woods! If it is forested terrain you seek, these mostly newer homes are modestly sized and meld their redwood-y setting with modern construction and amenities.

Skyline Blvd:  This aptly named portion of the Oakland Berkeley Hills is close enough to the city and populated enough that is has an urban style. Again, mostly single-family detached homes with some multi-story apartments and attached homes as well. Newer and more modern than other parts of the Oakland Hills with some offering panoramic views from a woodsy setting.

Shepherd Canyon:  City living in the country! Again, predominantly single-family homes of a medium size and post World War II vintage. Some newer, but mostly well established homes.

Many large corporate employers have headquarters in Oakland, such as Dreyers Ice Cream, Clorox, and Kaiser Industries.
