Scotts Valley – High-Tech in the Mountains

Scotts Valley is a small city nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains of approximately 11,000 people.

Scotts Valley was named after Hiram Scott, an early California settler whose home is a part of the Santa Cruz County Historical Trust.

It was also once the home of Director Alfred Hitchcock, who is said to have received the  inspiration for his movie “The Birds” while living there.  Legend has it that the movie is based on an actual event in nearby Capitola.

Scotts Valley benefits from its location along Highway 17 through the Santa Cruz Mountains between San Jose and Santa Cruz and Monterey to the south. Not only is it a welcome stop along the way, it is in close proximity to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, and acres of coastal redwood forests.

However, this is not a rustic roadside village – it has major hotels and the headquarters of many large companies, including high-tech giants Seagate Technologies and E-mu Systems, and clothing manufacturer “Sessions”.

Public schools are operated by Scotts Valley Unified School District, which has one high school, Scotts Valley High School.

There are also private schools, Baymonte Christian School (K-8) and Bethany University, a four-year Christian university.
