Antioch is a city of approximately 100,000 people in eastern Contra  Costa County.

It is one of the oldest towns in California, founded around the time of California statehood and the Gold Rush.

It was founded by the Smith brothers who originally called the town “Smith’s Landing”.  However, a year later the town’s minister persuaded them to rename the town after the city in the Bible of the same name – Antioch.

Once a farming and dairy town, it changed quickly with the discovery of coal and copper into an industrial center much like its neighbor, Pittsburg.

It was incorporated as a city in 1872.

Today, Antioch is a “commuter town” with a large residential presence and its attendant commercial development.

Known today as “The Gateway to the Delta”, Antioch has a public marina and several private marinas, boatyards, and yacht clubs.  Sport fishing is also a popular and there is a public fishing pier near downtown.
